Housing advice for families
The University has a limited number of family units which are currently fully booked, so we recommend focusing your search on the private rented sector.
If you'd like to register your interest in University-managed family housing, email: housing@sussex.ac.uk.
If you’re planning to bring family members with you to Sussex, it's important to understand the significant costs and challenges of finding suitable accommodation.
Before making any plans with your family, we strongly recommend that you first travel to Sussex alone to . The University is unable to find or arrange accommodation on your behalf.
You must secure appropriate accommodation before your family arrives, because:
- temporary accommodation is expensive
- rental housing in Brighton & Hove is in high demand - it can take weeks or even months to find a suitable home
- the University’s limited family housing is currently fully booked
- we're unable to provide temporary or emergency accommodation if you arrive without confirmed housing in place.
Private accommodation costs
Rental prices in the local area are competitive and often expensive. It’s essential that you budget for both upfront and ongoing costs.
As a guide, average monthly rents in Brighton & Hove start at around:
- £1,300 for a two-bedroom apartment
- £2,100 for a four-bedroom house.
You may also need to cover upfront costs, such as:
- a security deposit (usually five weeks’ rent)
- a holding deposit (usually one week’s rent)
- Up to 6-12 months of rent in advance (although this generally isn't required if you have a UK-based guarantor).
We also recommend budgeting for while you search for a permanent home - and doing plenty of research in advance to support a smoother move.
